のとおりにしたら printer test page のみ印刷できるようになりました。
但し あれやこれやとやったので来た道をたどれません。
このtestページの最後は「printed using cups v1.1.x」と大文字で書かれてました。
なお http://localhost:631/ での設定はlips3がでてこないので挫折でした。

また a2ps -P lips3 hoge.txt でなんかでてきますが 文字化けをしてます。
ghostscriptをとおさないといけないようです。
